How to: Register as a Google Play Developer
Overview
To publish your app on Android's Google Play store, you will need to sign up as an Android developer.
All developers are required to register a Google Play developer account. If you plan to sell your apps through the Google Play store, you will also need a Google Wallet Merchant account.
Getting Started
To register as a Google Play Developer you will need:
- Company Google Account (not your personal one) e.g. apps@companyname.com
- $25 USD (once off)
Applying for a Google Play Developer Account
When applying to become an Android developer, you will need to sign in with a Google account. It is recommended that you use a Google account specific to your company, rather than your own personal Gmail login.
To register your Google account in the Google Developer program:
- Go to the Google Play Developer Console. Read and agree to the Google Play Developer distribution agreement.
- Pay the $25USD registration fee
- Enter your developer information details, such as your name, email address, website URL, etc.
- Once you have completed the registration process, you will receive a verification email.
Applying for a Google Wallet Merchant Account
There are several ways to monetise your apps. You can offer the app itself as a free download, and offer individual content as downloadable in-app purchases.
Alternatively, you can set a price for downloading the app through the Google Play store. If you with to sell your apps as paid apps, you will need a Google Wallet Merchant Account.
To create a Google Wallet Merchant account:
- Sign in to the Google Play Developer Console.
- Click the Financial Reports tab on the side navigation bar.
- Follow the instructions to create your merchant account.
